Sculpture

My work explores the interplay of light and color against the backdrop of dark settings. Like a prism bending waves, I cast shapes using resins and rare earth minerals that capture, absorb, and re-emit light. The result is a luminous surface that seems to move and breathe as the colors retreat leaving only light. Through this process, I channel the transformative power of light, against darkness, much like a painter wields dynamic strokes on canvas.

My creations are not just static sculptures. Moods are crafted through an application of color theory. The latest series is a collection of botanical molds cast with a strong palette of rare earth elements. Consequently, the light and wave spectrums create an opportunity to use bold colors. In short, these elements infuse the sculpture and light with a luminosity that transcends the physical, touching the spiritual.

My work, which luminescences in the dark, harnesses the incandescence of the rare earth elements. The works of art create a glowing evocation. Something that strikes a chord with our innate spiritual nature. My hope is the work will resonate with viewers on a deeper, more intrinsic level. In each piece, a visual experience and a spiritual journey are illuminated by the artistry. Learn more: https://larryjortega.com/desert-totem-sirens-of-the-desert/

Light and Dark: Agave Series

The elegant forms of agave sculpture outline the darkness while Light and color leak out gently at night. A theme of healing and restoration is part of the desert enchantment of the work.  This two-part art piece comprises the Agave casting and the “spade” shape platform.

The Agave cast sits on a platform created using two fused pieces of burlwood. The surface of the live edges of the burl is pitted and rough. At the same time, the interior of the burlwood has pits and openings filled with resin and rare-earth minerals. Like old healed wounds, the surface depicts the scars of life, healed but scarred. The color of light within the sculpture portrays additional spiritual metaphors—the hope of following the truth that sets you free.

Laser light creates light graffiti on the surface of the agave sculpture. I use laser pens to produce graffiti on the sculpture’s surface. The pattern of light creating the graffiti disappears over time or by turning on the light, which erases the graffiti from the surface. Quite spiritual in a way.

Rare-Earth Minerals

Rare-earth minerals offer a vibrant color palette. The “Agave Series” Desert Enchantment incorporates two or more Agave leaves. Attached to the platform is a bouquet of Agave leaves, created using silicone molds to replicate the actual Agave leaves with precision. Layers of translucent resin allow the light to bend sensually.
