I have been creating things from the desert that are sharp and spikey. I see the characteristics of cactus and succulents surrounding the studio. The sharp spines, and edges evolved for protection in the desert. The plants of the desert have developed to methods to capture and store scarce moisture.
A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe. Spirit beings are guardians of the gardens. The angel Uriel is said to stand sentry to the gates of Eden.
Desert Totems have a shape that is smooth and sensual. The skin has bulbuous protrusions through out the length of the Totem succulent. Sinewy shapes guide moisture down the body to the root system.
A small series (3 total) of Totems were cast as artist proofs. Two Totem pieces remain that have a unique desert color palette. Blue,-green, yellow, pink, green and orange-red. A wood and cast resin base supports the 24″ cast resin succulent.
